A kilobyte (KB), as defined by the International System of Units, is equal to exactly 1,000 bytes. Except sometimes, when used by certain computer parts manufacturers, it is equal to exactly 1,024 bytes. As you can imagine, this is a source of confusion.
For most applications, the kilobyte should be equal to 1,000 bytes. When doing work with computer storage/RAM parts made by certain manufacturers, use the 1,024 byte value when applicable.
This ambiquity of value for the kilobyte lead to the creation of the kibibyte.
